Wicker Man ride at Alton Towers

We got an interesting call to go and take some photo’s of The Wicker Man ride at Alton Towers – a wooden framed beast of a rollercoaster that is the first wooden coaster built in the UK for 20 years.

People scream as they ride on a wooden rollercoaster at a theme park.

The first UK rollercoaster built from wood in over 20 years.

Got to confess that I know nothing about rollercoasters, and have never enjoyed riding them…but what a stir this machine has caused. Everyone seems to know about it and everyone has been keen to ask about it. Seems the publicity has gone far and wide and generated quite some buzz.  Thankfully the photography was all to be done from the sidelines and I didn’t have get on-board.

The Wicker Man is a big new attraction for Alton Towers. Years of development, not to mention the £16m cost, have involved 500,000 man hours, 7,500 tonnes of wood, 1.8m screws and 65,000 bolts. As with any rollercoaster, it’s a significant feat of engineering – and, in this case, lots of special effects.

Though Alton Towers have some great stock shots of The Wicker Man in the dark they wanted to do some test shots of the ride in daylight. We got an array of angles and have found some good spots for a future shoot. Here’s a few of the straightforward angles…and a few other photographs we were tasked with collecting – including CBeebies Land and some of the park’s famous, smaller rides.

You can see the redevelopment all around and it’s very pretty in the good weather…although I arrived at 1pm and left again at 4am the next morning so didn’t too great a lookaround.

Riga is the capital and largest city of Latvia. With 641,481 inhabitants (2016), it is also the largest city in the Batic States  home to one third of Latvia’s population and one tenth of the three Baltic states’ combined population.

Crash diets have long had a bad reputation, but some experts say it’s time to think again about the black sheep of the dieting world.
Dr Javid Abdelmoneim teams up with some of Britain’s top scientists in a bold new experiment that puts the latest research on crash dieting to the test. Four obese volunteers with serious weight-related health issues, including type 2 diabetes, go on an extreme weight-loss programme and give up real food, surviving on a very low calorie soups-and-shakes diet.
Will they lose weight in the long run and turn around their health problems? If it works, this radical approach to weight loss could help millions, save the NHS billions of pounds and revolutionise the way we diet.

Manchester City Trophy Parade

It was back to the old press photography days yesterday as we had a great day covering the Manchester City Trophy Parade for the Manchester Evening News.  It’s always a gamble trying to find a good spot, but got some great shots and plenty of press coverage, and of course the sunny weather helped bring out fans in their thousands!

The players then made their way to a stage on Deansgate with the Premier League trophy and Carabao Cup.

City won the title with five games to spare in April and went on to accumulate a record-breaking 100 points.  They also scored 106 goals and won 32 games as they finished 19 points ahead of their nearest rivals Manchester United.

Hotter Shoes Summer Staff Picks Photography

Fashion Footwear Photography at Hotter Shoes.  We’ve just been photographing a PR / social media campaign to support Hotter Shoes’ new advertising campaign. Hotter’s staff chose their favourite shoes for summer and were photographed against a set of vibrant colours to match the ad campaign. A really nice job and a great gang to work on this photography booking with.

We’ve been the first choice commercial PR photographers for this great fashion footwear brand for nearly 10 years and have covered a lot of wonderful subjects – right from the first job, a commercial photography shoot with the MD at the HQ in Skelmersdale, near Liverpool, as pictured here.

Jon Parker Lee - commercial photographer for Hotter Shoes UK Fashion Footwear Photography Hotter ShoesHotter Shoes was set up in 1959 in Lancashire and they’ve been designing and making footwear ever since – with over 80 stores worldwide.  They diversified from their roots – slipper production – in the early 1990s, when they identified a niche in the market for stylish shoes with comfort built in. Since then product innovation, world class production facilities and continual reinvestment in our business has seen our shoe collections expand beyond all recognition and our circle of Hotter friends grow by hundreds of thousands each year.

Beaconsfield Footwear, which trades as Hotter Shoes, has won the top prize at Insider’s Made in the UK Awards. The business beat off competition from luminaries in the sphere, including Rolls-Royce and Jaguar Land Rover, to be crowned Manufacturer of the Year.

The awards brought together the winners of Insider’s regional Made in… Awards across nine separate categories and honoured the cream of the UK’s manufacturing industry. The event took place last night at St George’s Hall in Liverpool and was compèred by broadcaster Colin Murray, with keynote speeches from Bob Gilbert, chairman of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, alongside Chris Brown, director of Marketing Liverpool.

Carried out a bit of construction site photography as work on the huge Didsbury Technology Park in Manchester has started.

Bruntwood, Siemens, PJ Livesey and Manchester City Council have formed a strategic partnership to bring the project forward, with the development earmarked for nine acres of the Siemens Campus at West Didsbury.
